FIC 1968: the 'É Proibido Proibir' episode

At the São Paulo round of the 1968 International Song Festival (FIC), held at TUCA, Caetano Veloso performed 'É Proibido Proibir' with Os Mutantes and, met with hostile booing, delivered a furious harangue against the crowd that became legendary. The provocation crystallized the regime's and the public's growing intolerance of Tropicália. Within months it would help draw the authorities' attention that ended in the artists' imprisonment.
