Kurt Cobain

The singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter of Nirvana, whose raw voice and ambivalence about fame made him the era's reluctant figurehead. Cobain wrote songs that married hardcore intensity to indelible melody, and his discomfort with the success that followed became part of grunge's mythology. He died in Seattle in April 1994, a date widely taken as the close of the scene's first era.
