The first jazz record (1917)

In 1917 the Original Dixieland Jass Band, a group of white New Orleans musicians, made the recording usually cited as the first jazz record, with 'Livery Stable Blues' among its sides. The disc sold widely and launched a national appetite for the new music. Its appearance marks the threshold at which jazz, until then a live and largely local phenomenon, entered the world of mass-produced sound.
