First Hot Five session (1925)

In 1925 Louis Armstrong gathered his Hot Five for the first of the studio sessions that would remake jazz over the next three years. Recording in Chicago with Lil Hardin, Johnny Dodds, and others, the band placed Armstrong's improvising voice at the music's center. The series that began here, running through 'Heebie Jeebies' to the Hot Seven and 'West End Blues', is among the most consequential in the music's history.
