John Lennon

John Lennon founded the skiffle group that grew into the Beatles and remained one of the band's two principal songwriters. His rhythm guitar and biting voice gave Merseybeat much of its edge, balancing Paul McCartney's melodic instincts. Born and raised in Liverpool, he embodied the city's restless, irreverent musical temperament.

The blues that travelled from the Delta into American rock'n'roll also reached Liverpool through the skiffle craze that John Lennon's first group, the Quarrymen, played. Merseybeat's beat-group template absorbed that blues-rooted repertoire before reshaping it into original songs.
