Cybotron

The duo of Juan Atkins and Vietnam veteran Richard "3070" Davis, Cybotron fused electro, funk and a cybernetic philosophy inspired by futurist writing. Their early-1980s singles, especially "Clear" and "Cosmic Cars," are widely regarded as the proto-techno that pointed the way out of disco-era electronics. When Atkins's pull toward pure machine music outgrew the partnership, he left to launch Model 500 and Metroplex.

  • migrates to Juan Atkins

Juan Atkins began in Cybotron, then left the electro duo to pursue a purer machine music alone as Model 500. That departure, and the founding of Metroplex that followed, is the hinge on which Detroit techno turns from electro into a genre of its own. The move carried Cybotron's futurism forward while shedding its rock-band frame.
