Issued in 1980 on Mercury, the self-titled debut by Kurtis Blow was the first rap full-length released by a major label. It collected his early singles into an album at a moment when the industry still doubted that rap could sustain anything longer than a twelve-inch. Its existence signaled that the new music had won institutional recognition.
