João Donato

A pianist and accordionist whose harmonically adventurous playing predates and shadows the bossa nova generation, Donato was an early influence on João Gilberto and Jobim. His spare, percussive piano helped point the way toward bossa's understated swing before he spent years working in the United States. He returned to Brazil to become one of its most singular instrumentalists and composers.
