Paul van Dyk

Born in East Germany, Paul van Dyk moved to West Berlin shortly before the Wall fell and became a fixture of the reunified city's club scene. His melodic, euphoric productions pulled Berlin techno toward the brighter, more anthemic sound that would later be called trance. His 1994 debut album marked the arrival of a producer who carried the city's energy to a global audience.

Paul van Dyk was among the defining residents of E-Werk, the techno club housed in a former Berlin power station. The venue's halls became a home for his brighter, melodic strain of the city's sound. His sets there helped pull Berlin techno toward what would be called trance.
