Mary Lou Williams

Pianist, composer and arranger Mary Lou Williams was a mentor and confidante to the bebop generation, hosting Monk, Gillespie and others at her Harlem apartment as the style coalesced. A leading musician since the swing era, she absorbed and championed the new harmony while writing for the era's big bands. Her standing made her one of the few women at the center of bebop's New York circle.
